Across Sub-Saharan Africa, digital public spheres face unprecedented erosion from low-cost Generative AI tools and platform profit models that prioritize engagement over truth. This session examines the rapid rise of "AI slopaganda"—low-quality synthetic media, automated bot networks, and commercialized disinformation-for-hire—and its compounding threat to civic participation, climate advocacy, and electoral integrity. Co-hosted by Magamba Network and Baraza Media Lab, this interactive workshop brings together grassroots media practitioners, digital creators, policy advocates, and tech experts to dissect how algorithmic design amplifies synthetic manipulation in non-Western markets. Moving beyond traditional, reactive fact-checking, the session highlights African-led countermeasures, including open-source forensic toolkits, community verification hubs, plain-language counter-narratives (such as NAFASI’s News Factory and Ukweli framework), and sovereign civic infrastructure. Through real-world case studies from East, Southern, and West Africa, participants will engage in a collaborative dialogue on holding global tech platforms accountable for local language content moderation blind spots. The workshop offers practical approaches for civil society actors to defend information integrity, protect vulnerable activists from automated online harassment, and demand transparent, equitable algorithmic governance in the Age of Intelligence.

Expected Outcomes
1. Capacity & Toolkits: Participants will acquire practical, open-source frameworks for detecting AI synthetic media, tracking bot networks, and deploying plain-language verification toolkits adapted for grassroots movements.
2. Policy Deliverable: Publication of a joint policy briefing detailing concrete multistakeholder recommendations on platform accountability, local language moderation, and algorithmic transparency to be submitted to regional bodies and tech companies.
3. Transnational Synergy: Formalized cross-border collaboration between civic tech hubs, media labs, and international digital rights advocates to share real-time threat intelligence and cross-verify viral disinformation during critical democratic moments.

Because AI manipulation and algorithmic design evolve rapidly, a brief framing segment followed by structured interactive breakout discussions allows onsite and virtual delegates to share regional perspectives, analyze case studies, test verification methodologies, and collaboratively draft platform accountability demands.

Because AI manipulation and algorithmic design evolve rapidly, a brief framing segment followed by structured interactive breakout discussions allows onsite and virtual delegates to share regional perspectives, analyze case studies, test verification methodologies, and collaboratively draft platform accountability demands.
Hybrid Format: To guarantee equal engagement, the session employs an Onsite Moderator and a dedicated Online Moderator working in tandem. Online participants will interact via a unified Q&A queue (Slido) for live polling and question upvoting. The Online Moderator will actively bridge virtual interventions into the physical room during dedicated floor discussions. Shared digital whiteboards (Miro) will allow online and onsite participants to jointly map AI disinformation vectors and counter-strategies in real time.
